Student Activities

Introducing students to ASHRAE is the path to maintaining and growing a successful Chapter.  Student involvement at any level to the HVAC industry is a benefit, not only to the industry itself, but also to the student who may not even be aware HVAC is a potential career path.  ASHRAE offers many opportunities to involve students in our field.  On top the many ASHRAE scholarships available to student members, as detailed below, the society also offers:

• The annual ASHRAE Student Design Competition:  Geared towards engaging college engineering students in the HVAC field, the three available competitions offer a chance to compete globally against other schools.  The top three finalists are offered monetary prizes as well as transportation, lodging and expenses to the following years ASHRAE Expo where the team is presented with an award for their entry.
• NEW! The ASHRAE 3D Modeling Competition:  Aimed at introducing HVAC at the high school level, the 3D modeling competition offers a guided competition using Sketchup to design an HVAC system for a building using the same process as a Mechanical Engineer.
• Introduce an elementary student to the HVAC field with Lucy's Engineering Adventure.  Written with a K-5 audience in mind, this rhyming picture book introduces children to building construction and HVAC engineering through a young girl's visit to an unfinished building with her architect Father.

The chapter can accrue PAOE points for very simple student interactions.  If any ASHRAE Member has contact with a student in any of the following capacities, please reach out to the Student Activities Chairperson either by phone or email so the interaction can be recorded:

• Your firm hires a student for an internship or paid position between semesters.
• Your firm plans to hire or interview students for internships or paid positions between semesters.
• A student intern is granted a full-time position post-graduation.
• Any ASHRAE Member talks about their job in front of a class, boy scout or girl scout troop, church group, etc. (K-12 and college level).
• You volunteer to assist in any capacity with a student or group of students where HVAC is a subject matter.
